Giacobbe "Jake" LaMotta (July 10, 1922 - September 19, 2017) was a professional World Middleweight Champion fighter who later generations came to know via the motion picture Raging Bull (1980). Best known as the "Raging Bull," LaMotta began fighting as a child as a means of supporting his family. He turned professional in 1941 and in October 1942, faced the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson (who would become one of his main rivals during his career). Although he knocked down Sugar Ray at the start of the bout, LaMotta went on to lose in a unanimous decision. In a February 1943 rematch, the heavier LaMotta took his revenge, dominating the fight and knocking Robinson out of the ring in the eighth round ? and ultimately handing Sugar Ray his first professional loss. That was perhaps the best outing for the Raging Bull, however, as he would lose their next three meetings. (Credit: PSA/DNA)
